Description

Hi, I think NAVIT is a great project and the working functionality and supported platforms is impressive. Unfortunately the usability could be much more better, as a navi isn't used just by geeks who might like config file patching. As a result, the default packages should be shipped with real good looking visual styles.

This includes:

  • icons with the same visual style. Recommend to use vector icons and/or spec. styles with a level of detail for different display dimensions (laptop+tablets, smartphones, legacy phones, ...)
  • generalization/selection strategies: It's obvious, that a map for cyclists is different than a map for regular car drivers. Would be great if per default a medium level of detail is drawn (not to much POIs at zoom levels for general orientation). This includes good selection at what zoom what aspects are important (as city labels etc.).
  • map colouring: Every country has it's specific colour codes (e.g. for lines representing interstate highways)
  • anti aliasing

All in all will result in a much more friendly visual appearance (and so User experience) for new users.

Thanks for your ideas. There are actually several requests for enhancement in your list, so I guess we'll have to split this up :-). About your points:

Icons with the same visual style. Recommend to use vector icons and/or spec. styles with a level of detail for different display dimensions

This is already in the works. Navit already mostly uses vector icons, there are only a few bitmapped icons where no replacement is available. As to visual style: We try to choose icons that go together well, but if they can be improved, we're open to suggestions :-).

generalization/selection strategies: It's obvious, that a map for cyclists is different than a map for regular car drivers. Would be great if per default a medium level of detail is drawn (not to much POIs at zoom levels for general orientation).

This already happens, and can be configured in navit.xml. Though a better set of defaults might help. Please post a detailed bug for situations where the default map rendering is too detailed.

map colouring: Every country has it's specific colour codes (e.g. for lines representing interstate highways)

This is a difficult one. On the one hand, using country-specific colors might help, OTOH it's helpful for Navit to be consistent from country to country. For now I think consistency is more important, but I'm open to arguments.

anti aliasing

Good idea.

Please note that while we appreciate ideas for improvement, it's better to file them as separate bugs. I'll probably file a few more specific requests for the things you pointed out, and close this one as duplicate.

  • Resolution set to duplicate
  • Status changed from new to closed

A feature request for anti-aliasing already exists (#731). The other ideas you propose are unfortunately a bit vague and would need a lot of fleshing out. Therefore I'm closing this entry as a duplicate.

If you have specific ideas how to attack the other points you mention (icon style, map and icon level of detail, map colouring), please file a separate feature request. Thanks for your input!
