#1159 new enhancement/feature request

Planet Extractor Latin letters International

Description

Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese characters are mostly not understandable / readable on Map. When downloading a Navit map, to set the desired character should be possible.

1.) As before, each of the local characters

2.) International use the Latin alphabet

3.) International use the desired characters

I have no information how many options are available to characters in the OSM. The Latin letters in English are included anyway.

Thanks for submitting this issue :)

At least for me there are still a few questions open to determine how we might fix this behaviour:

If I understand you right, you view the map of a part of the world, that uses non latin character system. Let's say you look at china and want to have labels that are easier to read right? As you wrote, something like http://toolserver.org/~osm/locale/en.html?zoom=4&lat=34.63321&lon=96.81152&layers=BT vs.
http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=5/32.935/99.470&layers=N or
http://mapq.st/1daSDwe

But to get this international translations, each element needs to have a name:en=* tag and we might need to extend binfile to support multiple string items. Personally I would like to keep the language support very smal in a first try, as EN should fix the "I can't read anything on the maps!" aspect ;)
