Description

Original ticket from cathodion :

"Hey guys,

We're creating a project at OpenMoko that enables mobile devices to share their locations through the internet and make your friends visible on the map. It is a really simple protocol and it would be really cool if all phones that will run OpenMoko are compatible with Cars running Navit.

Let me know what you think.

Original comment by Mineque : "we have a talk about that few times. But for now i think that more important is to get garmin's maps working better. This feature is in plans but for now usability is more important than gadgets. If you could provide us more informations about your project developers could look at it implementation in Navit. Maybe it'll be simpler than we think and won't take a lot of time.

It might be better if we could discuss the protocol first. The idea has been around in navit since ages, and there is a draft about a similar functionnality. You should have received a mail about this from cp15. Please contact us, either here, or better, on IRC for a live chat about it : irc.freenode.org channel #navit

Wouldn't something like this not be easy to achieve with a new <vehicle> that uses e.g. gpsd://myfirendsIP as location source?

GPSD would take care of publishing my location, and we would simply add friends to our list of vehicles.
