#400 new enhancement/feature request

Icons for major highways, city names

Reported by: dctucker Owned by: KaZeR
Priority: minor Milestone: version 0.6.0
Component: core Version: git master
Severity: Keywords: icons, highway, i18n

Description

I think it'd be great to see major numbered highways demarcated by a highway icon. For the US, this may require several different icons, but I would be willing to do the design work and produce PNGs... for Europe [I imagine] there may be only a couple simple icons.

I'm drawing a direct comparison between Navit's rendering and that of Google Maps. Regardless of how the icons end up looking, it would be very helpful to see the number of the major roadways when not zoomed close enough to read the road name.

Being able to see city names when zoomed out would also be nice-- but then maybe I simply haven't configured my navit.xml properly?

  • Milestone set to want patch / contribution

About icons highway, patch/contribution is welcome.

About city name, it would be better suited in another ticket, but have you tried playing with the level values in navit.xml ?

  • Keywords highway i18n added
  • Milestone changed from want patch / contribution to version 0.6.0

This is a good point to improve the map layouts for drivers. by mapquest.com by mapquest.com

But to realize it, we need some more tasks getting done:

  • create artifical points where this icons should be placed
  • add language specific feature styles
  • create the SVG icons

I scheduled it for the 0.6 release that focus usability, as this issue isn't focused on stability or critical.
