#1074 new enhancement/feature request

disable speech output in favor of beeping

Reported by: martin tlustos Owned by:
Priority: minor Milestone: version 0.6.0
Component: port/wince Version: git master
Severity: Keywords: espeak, speech, navit.xml, sound

This is a follow up on my bug related to special characters found in German: it would be nice to be able to replace speech output with beeping, if so wished (as in my case where the speech output just sounds horrible because of the missing input locale on my win ce device). Alternatively, it might be a good idea to be able to control the amount of speech output via navit.xml (let's say, I want navit to say "in 200m turn left", but not to add the "into xxx-street" nor "follow street for 1km").

I have updated speech tag description at .

So you can make navit not to speak street names with vocabulary_name="0" and vocabulary_name_systematic="0" added to your speech tag.

To have beeps instead of usual speech, switch to speech_cmdline and make data attribute to point to some external "beep" program which would ignore its parameters and only beep when called.

If you manage to find usable beep or dialogless wavplay program for wince, please share your expirence. I'm pretty sure it's not that trivial as it seems at first glance.

Thanks for the updated hints, it already helped a lot. The only thing now that remains is the "follow street for..." which has the German "Straße" in it, and the "Demnächst" from the English "turn ... soon". If that could be turned of as well it would be great. Another solution would be to change the German translation to not include special characters... ;-)

I already did a pretty extensive search on beep or wav players for wince, but there are none really. There is a system internal call routine, so you can let win ce directly play a wav file. I think some helpful information can be found here (I'm not a programmer, so I don't know really):

Oh by the way, if there is anything that needs to be tested on a low memory (64mb) wince machine, I'd be glad to help.

  • Keywords sound added

I support this feature request, as esp. the low end consumer GPS don't have a full sound system. Here I use a Medion S3857 that has only a beeper.

So it would be cool to get beeps instead:

  • to announce new directions
  • to confirm user input (buttons pressed)

I don't have a idea, how you can figure out to tune the beeper, but maybe it's just to send the "bell" signal

  • Milestone set to version 0.6.0

As this is a request not related on stability, I will schedule it for the next major release.
